Stage 3 produces a break

In the runup to the cobbles, there was a crash near the front of the field. Involved were Benjamin Noval of US Postal, Iban Mayo of Euskaltel-Euskadi, and Marco Velo of Fassa Bortolo and a score of others.

Postal turned up the heat over the cobbles, and, for now, there's a select group off the front that includes Armstrong, Hamilton, Ullrich, Heras, Levi Leipheimer, Bobby Julich, and others, then a group (Liggett says 2+ minutes back) with Thor Hushovd, the current yellow jersey, Mario Cipollini, Iban Mayo, and Christophe Moreau, among others.

The lead group has sucked up a break by Bram de Groot and Jens Voigt. There's still another section of cobbles to ride.

Best placed riders on the day are Robbie McEwen, Jens Voigt, and Fabian Cancellara; likely one of them will wear yellow tonight.
