I've been watching the Tour de France on and off for years since Greg LeMond and I've never heard of Red Numbers. Do they just give those out when the guy they like doesn't win?

The red numbers go to the most combative rider of the previous stage. Pereiro is wearing them again today -- they're awarded before the end of each day's stage.

A lot of the time they'll go to riders in a failed breakaway, or a French rider in a successful breakaway who doesn't get a win. It's a judgment call.

Cool,

Thanks Frank. I searched your site and saw other mentions of the Red Numbers. I guess I never noticed before because I wasn't as into the people involved as George Hincapie.
