Stage 10 wrapup

One thing I'm keeping an eye on is Armstrong's back. He's been stretching on the bike more than I ever remember seeing, and as soon as today's stage was over, he went over to a trailer and doubled over both from the effort, and it looked like, to stretch his back.

And on Tuesday, when he decided it was time to put the pressure further on his rivals Armstrong was almost outpaced by his own teammate Yaroslav Popvych, the Ukrainian all-rounder who is making his race debut.

"I asked 'Popo' to accelerate with around 10 km to go, but he really accelerated. That was a sprint!," quipped Armstrong, who paid tribute to Popovych after he had come back from a crash earlier on the stage on the rapid descent of the Cormet de Roseland to help lead the American.

"He didn't even think about the crash he had earlier in the stage."

Armstrong also wants his mountaintop mates thinking about racing for second:

"They're a super team and set a great pace for me at the front of the climb. I had good legs today, but I want to say thanks to Rasmussen, Valverde and (Francisco) Mancebo - without them I might not have got the result I wanted.

"I was trying to get everybody to keep riding because I heard the time gaps for Jan (Ullrich) and Ivan (Basso)," added Armstrong as he explained the moment he had been seen talking to Rasmussen on the climb.

"Everybody here today has to be a contender. They have to put as much time into Jan Ullrich as possible, because he's gonna catch them in the Pyrenees and the (final) time trial."

Armstrong again:

"I was hoping for the stage win, but I think today we may have seen the future of cycling," he said. "Alejandro's strong, intelligent and he's fast. Very impressive."
