Stage 7 underway

Before the start today, the Tour observed a minute's silence in commemoration of the victim's of London's Underground bombings.

Gerolsteiner's Fabian Wegmann is the day's designated break. He's been as much as 8 minutes out in front since he attacked going over the 4th category Col de la Chipotte. Robbie McEwen was with him briefly, but fell back when the two were a minute ahead of the field.

The break has scored Wegmann the polka-dot jersey, as he was first over both climbs of the day, and two of his teammates worked to take 2nd and 3rd over the 2nd, ensuring his lead in the competition.

Hushovd took third at the day's first sprint line, at 37 km. At the second sprint line, Boonen and his Quick Step squad went up against Hushovd and the Credit Agricole team, with Boonen coming out on top, taking 4 points to Hushovd's 2, negating the 2 points Hushovd picked up at the first sprint. At the 3rd intermediate sprint, we had a replay, with Boonen outsprinting Hushovd for 2nd, so Boonen will end the day up by 2 points plus the difference between Hushovd and Boonen in the finishing sprint.

Steve Zampieri dropped out of the race at around the 56 kilometer mark; he was the lanterne rouge or last-placed rider after coming in very near the elimination time yesterday.

Big pileup towards the back, as the peloton crossed railroad tracks at a sharp angle in the wet. Somehow Samuel Dumoulin found himself in the middle. Doesn't look like anybody is seriously hurt.

Finally, with about 25 kilometers to ride, the peloton picks up Wegmann.

Looks like another sprint to the win. Quick Step and Davitamon-Lotto are driving the peloton.

It's a slight uphill on the finish, and NOOOOOOOO!!!! It's McEwen edging out Magnus Backstedt! FdJ's Bernhard Eisel is 3rd.

Top 10:
1) Robbie McEwen, Davitamon-Lotto, in 5:03:45
2) Magnus Backstedt, Liquigas-Bianchi, same time
3) Bernhard Eisel, Française Des Jeux, same time
4) Gerrit Glomser, Lampre-Caffita, same time
5) Baden Cooke, Française Des Jeux, same time
6) Fabian Cancellara, Fassa Bortolo, same time
7) Tom Boonen, Quick Step, same time
8) Gianluca Bortolami, Lampre-Caffita, same time
9) Thor Hushovd, Credit Agricole, same time
10) Juan Antonio Flecha, Fassa Bortolo, same time
