Ullrich to skip Sarthe, return in Romandy

Eurosport | Ullrich return delayed

Preseason Tour favorite Jan Ullrich will not start the Circuit de la Sarthe April 4th. Ullrich apparently has been feeling knee pain since early March, and will delay his 2006 race debut until the Tour of Romandy starting April 25th.

While Ullrich has been training, other Tour favorites have been winning: Alexandre Vinokourov took the Vuelta a Castilla y León last week, Ivan Basso won the overall at the Criterium International over the weeekend, and Floyd Landis won both Paris-Nice and the inaugural Tour of California.

Ullrich has traditionally started his season late, but this year will be starting 2-3 weeks later than I remember him starting in recent years. In 2004, he kicked off at the Tour of Murcia March 1, and last year, he started at Circuit de la Sarthe on April 5th.
