Tour What ifs

Pam (my wife) and I were riding today and she asked me, "what if Jan and Basso were in this tour, how would Landis be doing?" "Good question," I said. And then, "well, I don't really know." I mean, he doesn't look like he's been put in any difficulty, but would Jan have dominated the TT? Would Basso have ridden away on the Alpe? Would it be the 3 of them on the podium?

I was thinking the same "What if Basso and Jan..."? thing today.

Landis would be the Lone Ranger, looking to bust up the established teams' dominance. It would be wild.

Not that today wasn't wild.

Yikes! 2 more mountain days? It's going to come down to who is able to simply get out of bed on the last morning.

Let's see how the next two days go, but I suspect that Landis might have flown a little further under the radar if Ullrich and Basso had been there to attract all the media attention - and Floyd would just keep motoring up those slopes in the saddle at his own pace and getting onto the podium that way.

The real question is, "What if Lance...."

Agreed on motoring and Landis' style. He's definitely doing it his way and I think much of that is a "how you like me now" to Lance.

Given T-Mobile's team strength, especially in the first 10 days, I think Jan would be crushing. I mean, who ever knows how good shape Jan is really in, but everything I heard indicated that he knew this was his last, best chance. CSC has also looked quite good. While I've been impressed by Phonak - I didn't know what to expect from most of them - I think that Ivan and Jan are both at least as strong individually as Floyd, and their teams would be stronger.

Of course, are we comparing apples (clean Floyd) to oranges (doped Ivan & Jan)? I wish we knew.

But are we talking about Jan and Basso on the juice or off it?

And what if Vino was in? Yikes!
