O'Grady update: 5 broken ribs, three cracked vertebrae, fractured shoulder

Radio New Zealand News | O'Grady crashes out of Tour de France

O'Grady smiles as he's loaded in ambulanceCSC's Stuart O'Grady was stretchered out of the Tour, and it appears he pretty much damaged everything between neck and navel: he's got 5 broken ribs, a fractured shoulder, a punctured lung, a broken collarbone, and 3 cracked vertebrae.

And he was still smiling as they loaded him into the ambulance.

Good on ya, Stuey.

Here's an update: O'Grady says the post that broke his ribs may have saved his life by keeping him from going over a cliff.

That's not a smile, that's a grimace of pain.

David --

Could be, but compare with Graham Watson's on-the-spot photo before O'Grady was stabilized. THAT's a grimace of pain.

Later: I just saw the VS coverage again, and I think you're right. O'Grady looked quiet as they prepped him, but there was a quick grimace as they popped him up and into the ambulance. This looks about the same.

Yeah, also the later vs. coverage (the same enhanced I think you're talking about) had audio, and he's clearly making some very unpleasant noises while he's being loaded, a sort of hyperventilating moan, which looks to be the same shot that you're talking about.

I had the benefit of watching the extended coverage at the exact moment I was reading your post.

Did they show the crash and what happened?

No footage of crash has been shown as yet, and I for one am glad this is the case.

Stuey is my favourite rider, he was riding a quite sensational tour for his team in a support role. To have he & Mick Rogers leave the tour on the same day leaves it a bit lighter on for good hearted characters.

No good for nobody.

Does anyone have an update on Stuey's condition please?
I've been searching the Net to no avail.
I just hope that he will be out of hospital for his birthday on the 6th August.
